Mrs. Cado
You’re seeing Mrs. Cado in the Fast Track area of your ED. She is an 84-year-old woman who arrived by ambulance with right shoulder pain after having a fall at home. Her past medical history includes arthritis, osteoporosis, hypertension, previous MI, and a right hip fracture (8 years ago).
An X-Ray shows an impacted humeral head fracture, stable.
Your plan is to treat her with a shoulder immobilizer, acetaminophen for pain, and follow-up with an orthopedic surgeon in a few weeks.
Seems easy, right?
- Watch the video and answer the questions that follow.
- While the doctor has done a thorough job of assessing her physical problem, what components of the assessment have NOT been addressed? What barriers to discharge have been identified by Mrs. Cado, her family, and the nurse?

- Watch the video below, and think about what can be done about Mrs. Cado’s other problems to allow for a more durable discharge.
- What is the doctor doing to ensure a successful discharge?

Good assessment and planning set up by ED.
Great videos
seems reasonable
certainly depends on services available in your area, bed availability, etc.
Mrs. Cado may be able to go to rehab without an admission.
I would not let a patient who had just fallen, walk that far away without a closer attendant
