Symptom Management
Important Note
A knowledge of symptom management is as important for the ED care of the older patient as resuscitation skills!
Emergency physicians frequently see older patients who are in active treatment for medical and surgical problems, are already receiving palliative care for cancer or other conditions, or are actively dying.
In the following pages we will review strategies for managing the most common symptom complexes. Much of the content in this section is drawn from the Cancer Care Ontario Symptom Management Toolbox.
